Wine Country Face-Off

February 13 – 16 , 2004

The Wine Country Face-Off  is our major fundraising event of the year. By January 1st  everyone should have paid their entry fees, but that only covers our fixed costs, such as: ice time, tournament application fees, referees, and trophy costs. The actual fund-raising aspect of the tournament comes from the raffle and silent auction, the sale of ads in the printed program, and a percentage of the T-shirt sales and the Pasta King dinner. Last year we made a nice profit of nearly $6,000! This year we’d like to double that. Profits from the tournament go directly into the club’s general fund and help offset the cost of running the hockey program all year long. Without it, your dues would be even higher! We’ve got a few people committed to making this the most profitable tournament yet. But they can’t do it alone. Later on you’ll be asked to volunteer at the tournament itself. In the meantime, here’s how you can help right now.

Program Advertisements:

Sell ads in the program. You, your insurance agent, family dentist, hairdresser, local hockey store, and favorite restaurant are all likely candidates. Show them a copy of last year’s program. Let them know we’re expecting close to 1,000 people at this year’s event. Suggest to restaurants that they include a discount coupon—all those people are going to be looking for somewhere to eat. The best part of the ad sales is that 40% of the money you make the club from selling ads will be credited towards your player’s dues! No fuss. No muss. This is where you, and the club, can benefit the most. Your team manager has the ad sales brochures and can answer any questions. Contact Marty Wilcox for the status of any potential advertiser at wcfohockey@aol.com or mwilcox@wt-nci.com.

Raffle & Silent Auction:

We’re still looking for donations for the raffle and silent auction (in addition to the team baskets). Most specifically we need hockey-related games and equipment, gift certificates from restaurants, goods made in Sonoma County, items to fill a coffee drinker’s, golf-related, or fly fishing gift basket, and, of course, wine. Think about what you or your kids might like to win in a raffle or silent auction and go for it. In the past the most successful items have been hockey memorabilia, Disneyland vacations, bicycles, tickets to sporting events, hockey camps and clinics. That doesn’t mean there’s not something else out there that will be a big hit. Did you send your kid to hockey camp last summer? If so, you’re in a good position to ask for a donation. Check the website (www.santarosaflyers.org) to see what has come in already. If you’re unsure, contact Elaine at elainede@sbcglobal.net. Besides the hockey itself, this is the most fun part of the tournament. It also generates the most money.

Hospitality Suite:

Our location in the heart of the wine country is what sets us apart from every other tournament around. Every team manager and coach receives a bottle of local wine upon arrival, as do rink employees who have gone the extra mile to help make our tournament a success. We also serve wine (and food) in the hospitality suite. For this we need wine, wine, and more wine. High-end wines will be put in the silent auction. Collectable wines may be auctioned off on-line. We also need food for our guests (and us) to enjoy over the course of the weekend. If you have contacts with any potential sources for food or wine, please let us know. Most importantly we need at least one, very special person to coordinate the hospitality suite. If you are interested in helping please contact Elaine de Man.

Hockey is a team sport. Here’s our opportunity to show the kids just exactly what teamwork is all about.
