Tryouts for the Santa Rosa Junior Hockey Club’s Cardinal Newman Junior Varsity High School hockey team will be held at the Redwood Empire Ice Arena, beginning on Saturday, August 6 at 6:3opm. Please check the ice time schedule (on the home page) for additional try out times. Cardinal Newman will participate in HP’s High School Hockey League and will compete in California’s Great American Rivalry Series hockey game in May. League games will take place at Sharks Ice at San Jose and the Oakland Ice Center starting early March.

CARDINAL NEWMAN HOCKEY
The Santa Rosa Junior Hockey Club, in conjunction with Cardinal Newman High School, is a proud member of the Sharks Ice - HP High School Hockey League. The HP High School Hockey League consists of two separate divisions: Junior Varsity and Varsity. Unlike traditional high school sports where JV and Varsity are determined by age, high school hockey divisions are formed based on skill level. The JV division is made up of recreational, in-house and less experienced club travel players, while the Varsity division is comprised of higher-end travel and tier players.
In order to participate in a Cardinal Newman team, a player must be currently enrolled in high school in Northern California, meet all California Interscholastic Federation guidelines, provide their own HECC approved ice hockey equipment and be current on all SRJHC financial obligations. Note that players may attend any high school, not just Cardinal Newman.
A joint JV/Varsity tryout, is held in the Autumn at Snoopy’s Home Ice in Santa Rosa. This tryout is used to select the JV team, and to identify players who should attend Varsity tryouts. A separate Varsity tryout is held in mid-Winter. Players identified in November to attend Varsity tryouts are not guaranteed a spot on the Varsity team.
JV practices will take place at Snoopy’s Home Ice starting in the October. JV games begin in December and run until February. Varsity practices will start in February after the Varsity tryout, and Varsity games will start in early March and run to mid-May. Most games will take place at Sharks Ice in San Jose or at the Oakland Ice Center. Games generally take place on weekends, however there are some mid-week games later in the season.
